A former Central Bank Deputy Governor (Bank of Zambia), Austin Kaputo Mwape is a seasoned central banker having worked for the Zambian central bank for 28 years (1983 – 2011) in various core departments rising through the ranks up to Deputy Governor. Between 2012 and 2020, Austin worked as a Senior Financial Sector Consultant with the World Bank on various assignments including working with the central banks in the Horn of Africa. He has also done consulting work on credit risk guarantee fund for UNDP in Nigeria. From 2022 to the present (2023), Austin has continued to work as a Senior Financial Sector Consultant directly with the central banks in the Horn of Africa on central bank board governance, central bank modernization and the refinement of financial sector regulatory and supervisory architecture.
Austin chaired the Taskforce that set up the Zambia National Advisory Board for Impact Investments (NABII Zambia). He is, at present, a member of the newly constituted board for NABII Zambia in addition to being a member of the Strategy Committee of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investments (GSG) Board of Trustees. Austin is also the current Chairperson for the Board of ABSA Bank Zambia PLC, a subsidiary of the ABSA Group Limited of South Africa. He has also chaired, in the recent past (for 6 years), the Board of Stanbic Bank Zambia Ltd, a subsidiary of the Standard Bank Group of South Africa.
Austin has expertise in economics, finance, and enterprise-wide risk management particularly as they relate to the financial sector and central banking. He holds a PhD in Finance from the University of London, (2004), an Msc in Industrial Economics from the University of Lancaster, (1987) and a BA in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Zambia, (1982)
