Speaker Bio

Habiba Ali has been working in the renewable energy industry since 2005. She co-founded the Developmental Association for Renewable Energies before launching Sosai Renewable Energies, a social enterprise that offers efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy products — including solar lamps, solar home systems, and water filters — to rural and peri-urban communities in Northern Nigeria. Under her leadership, Sosai has deployed over 60,000 improved cookstoves, 15,000 solar solutions, and impacted the lives of more than 650,000 people, saving approximately 120,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum and protecting over 75,000 trees from being felled. Habiba serves on the National Council of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, the National Advisory Board of Impact Investing of the Impact Investing Foundation of Nigeria, and the advisory boards of several companies. She has been recognised globally, including as the African winner of the UNSDG WeEmpower Award (2018), the global winner of the Diane von Furstenberg Prize, and a 2019 Vital Voices Global Leadership Award Honoree for Economic Empowerment. She is a Cherie Blair mentee, GSBI Fellow, Vital Voices GROW Fellow, World Bank WomenX Fellow, Acumen West African Fellow, and a Perennial and Cordes Fellow. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting, a master’s in banking and finance, and is completing a PhD in Management.
